When I was in the market looking for a second passport to expand my business internationally, I wasn’t aware of the options and the possibilities. The range of citizenship by investment programs is bewildering. My research began after I had identified my need. What I was certain about, is that I wanted a country that was a part of the European Union; it’s passport should give me a wide range of countries to travel visa-free including the United States, and would be safe and secure for my family. Budget was also a criterion, but I was clear that the benefit should outweigh the cost.

But why Malta?

I zeroed in on Malta, which is located in the Mediterranean Sea. At over €1,000,000 this is among the the most expensive citizenship through investment programs in the region, but what is offers in return by far outweigh the cost. To begin with, the Malta Citizenship by Investment Process follows a strict due diligence path that takes almost one year to complete. This process involves multiple steps that include prior criminal record checks, financial stability and banking history. To ensure that my family and I could start availing some of the benefits during our application approval process, the Maltese government issued us a Schengen Residence status for one year.

The passport is among the strongest in the world and it allows me visa-free travel to more than 175 countries worldwide, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union Schengen countries and to the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. These are not all the countries, but the ones that I need for my business travels. This is a significant upgrade on my native passport which provides visa on arrival and visa free to only 65 countries.

Additionally, Malta is a cosmopolitan melting pot of cultures. The Government of Malta encourages people from different cultures to come, live and work from Malta. It’s established a very safe and hospitable environment with a world-class medical and educational infrastructure that is great for me and my family. Overall, I am happy with my choice.
