The mechanical properties of bolts and nuts

Bolts find uses in a variety of applications ranging from automobiles to home appliances. The keys that make these tools so useful are their mechanical properties. Unlike nails and screws, bolts are fitted through a hole more significant than the extended cylindrical portion of the bolt but smaller than the head portion of the bolt. To prevent the nut from slipping off the opposite end, a nut is attached. The nut and bolt are designed to connect through a "screwing" system, where the bolt adjusts and turns perfectly in the notch that the nut has.


 Shackle Screws


Shackle bolts and nuts are the most common type. Commonly used in automobiles for purposes such as connecting the wheels to the vehicle body, the shackle bolt uses a nut to thread down onto the bolt to prevent the parts from sliding apart. Since these bolts are metal, they are commonly used with grease to make the parts move freely.


Spline Bolts


Unlike other bolts that require rotation, followed by a nut being used to ensure that, spline bolts use an alternative method to hold down. Spline bolts have strip teeth that extend from each side of the bolt. These teeth secure the bolt, avoiding the need for rotation, as well as the use of a nut. Spline screws are often used for shock absorbers, locking them in place.



Equalizer Screws
