Flanges are those pieces in the shape of a ring, disc or collar connected to one end of a pipe and which perform the function of joining this piece to another. This is the case whether it is another pipe, a valve or similar objects through bolts that give security and stability to the connected pieces. The importance of the flanges is explained by the fact that they not only allow the pieces to be joined in a comfortable and safe way but also to separate the desired section in case it is necessary to separate the pieces. This feature brings considerable versatility and flexibility to the systems and justifies their importance.

Types of flanges

The flanges, made of stainless steel, can be cast or forged. There are a number of designs on the market, the most common of which are:

  • Sliding flanges

  • Flange ad otto

  • Electrical insulation flanges

  • Threaded flanges

  • Flanges with neck to be welded

  • Blind flanges

Marking of flanges: how to read their identification

The marking of the flanges is an essential processing step since it allows you to give identification and, at the same time, to bring important information about the piece.Seven relevant elements must appear on the flange marking, and regardless of the order in which they appear, they must always appear on the part.

The way to read the marking of the flange that it must carry is as follows:

  • Manufacturer identification or logo.

  • Material type designated according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ATSM), including heat treatment.

  • Side type

  • The type of standard used to manufacture the flange.

  • Nominal thickness of the pipe to which it will be welded, this is for flanges of the type: WN or SW

  • The pressure range, as well as the nominal diameter of the flange

  • The number that identifies the casting or the manufacturer’s series.

The importance of relying on these elements is that ASTM A860 WPHY 52 allows you to verify the suitability of the piece before its use. It should be remembered that thanks to this, it can be ensured that each flange fulfils the function for which it was requested, i.e. that it corresponds to the material, dimensions and pressure level necessary for the final construction.

Flange marking technology

It should be emphasized that, in addition to the importance that the flanges have relative identification, the marking must be done so that it lasts and that its reading is always precise and more than clear. In this sense, Stainless Steel 304 Flanges suppliers boast maximum experience in marking systems for various sectors with devices that ensure quality and precise marking, as required by the material and the piece itself.

  1. The yield strength is more than double that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel and has sufficient plastic toughness required for forming.

  2. ASTM A860 WPHY 65 can replace high-alloy austenitic stainless steel and even corrosion-resistant alloys.

  3. ASTM A234 WP11 has good resistance to local corrosion.
