Magnesium acetate is a magnesium salt of acetic acid. It comes from acetic acid. Magnesium acetate is the acetate form of magnesium. Magnesium is a divalent cation, which is crucial to a series of biochemical processes such as neural signal, bone mineralization and muscle contraction. About 350 enzymes involved in glycolysis and Krebs cycle, formation of circulating amp and ATP, cell signal transduction, and protein and nucleic acid synthesis depend on magnesium. Because it is very hygroscopic, it must be stored away from water. It is also incompatible with strong oxidants and cannot be mixed with strong oxidants.

It is made by heating magnesium nitrate and acetic acid. Magnesium nitrate is heated together with anhydrous acetic acid. After reaction, boil for another 20 minutes. After a long standing time, anhydrous magnesium acetate precipitates. Filter by suction, wash with a small amount of absolute ethanol, and then dry in a vacuum drying oven at 60 ° C. The crystals contain free acetic acid, which should be dried for a long time until a constant weight is reached. Magnesium acetate tetrahydrate can also be heated to constant weight at 134 ° C to obtain anhydrous magnesium acetate.

Magnesium acetate is used in the manufacture of artificial fibers for cigarette filter tips; Used as a dye fixative in textile printing. It is also used as a preservative and disinfectant. Dye fixing agents, deodorants, disinfectants and preservatives for textile printing and dyeing.

Magnesium acetate is used as a reagent and a source of magnesium in chemistry and molecular biology. Magnesium has many biological functions in enzymology, structural integrity of cell membrane and cell wall, muscle cell physiology, etc.

From November 2018 to November 2019, China's total export of magnesium acetate to the Netherlands was 647900 kg, with a total export of 564997 US dollars. The largest proportion of exports in the last 12 months was 16.59% in 2019.05.

From November 2018 to November 2019, China's total export of magnesium acetate was 24478314 kg, with a total export value of 37652138 US dollars. The largest proportion of exports in recent 12 months was 12.24% in 2019.08.

From 2018.11 to 2019.11, China exported magnesium acetate to 67 countries. The import volume from high to low is South Africa, the United States, Canada, South Korea, Germany, Egypt, Russia, Australia, India and Poland. China's exports to South Africa are the highest, accounting for 8.81% of China's total exports.

The chemical formula of anhydrous magnesium acetate is Mg (C2H3O2) 2, the hydration form is magnesium acetate tetrahydrate, and the chemical formula is Mg (CH3COO) 2 • 4H2O. In this compound, the oxidation state of magnesium is 2+. Magnesium acetate is a magnesium salt of acetic acid. It is deliquescent. When heated, it decomposes to form magnesium oxide. Magnesium acetate is the source of magnesium commonly used in biological reactions.

Magnesium acetate is a white hygroscopic crystal. It smells like acetic acid and is soluble in water. When it is in aqueous solution, its pH value will be on the neutral alkaline side. Because it is very hygroscopic, it must be stored away from water. It is also incompatible with strong oxidants and cannot be mixed with strong oxidants.

In 1881, Charles Klammond invented the Klammond basket, which was one of the earliest effective gas cloaks. The reagents used in the invention include magnesium acetate, magnesium hydroxide and water.

In chemical experiments, magnesium acetate is usually used as a source of magnesium or acetate ion. One example is that magnesium acetate and magnesium nitrate are both used for molecular dynamics simulation and surface tension measurement. In the experiment, the author found that acetate has a stronger affinity for the surface than nitrate ion, and Mg2+has a strong repulsive effect on air/liquid interference. They also found that Mg2+has a stronger tendency to bind to acetic acid ions than nitrates.

One of the most common uses of magnesium acetate is in a mixture called calcium magnesium acetate (CMA). It is a mixture of calcium acetate and magnesium acetate. CMA is considered as an environmentally friendly demineralizer, which can replace NaCl and CaCl2. CMA can also be used as a powerful emission control agent for SO2, NOx and toxic particles during coal combustion to reduce acid rain, and as an effective catalyst to promote coal combustion.

Magnesium acetate has been found to cause conformational changes of E. coli enzyme Primase. This experiment compared the effects of Mg (OAc) 2, MnCl2, CaCl2, NaOAc, LiCl, MgSO4 and MgCl2 on E. coli Primase. It was found that Mg (OAc) 2 caused the best conformational change. The inducing effect of MgSO4 and MgCl2 was weak, and the others had no obvious effect.

When magnesium acetate is mixed with hydrogen peroxide, it plays a bactericidal role. When there is high or low concentration of fluorine, magnesium acetate can effectively ash organic compounds, preparing for fluorine analysis.

Magnesium acetate is a relatively safe compound with zero health hazard rating. However, you must wear gloves and goggles when handling it. If it enters the eyes, skin, ingestion or inhalation, it will cause irritation in the corresponding areas: eyes, skin, gastrointestinal system and lungs.
