Shiva is absolutely the primeval precursor of transformative power as well as technology. The key function of Lord Shiva is a destroyer, i.e., the one that damages the entire production (likewise called maha pralaya) at the end of a planetary cycle or chaturanga. One more part of his role as the destroyer is that he destroys the limitless process of birth and death and grants release to his followers.

Lord Shiva is called Mahadeva, or the biggest god, generally due to his highly benevolent and kind quality. He does not look at the history and attributes of his follower; anyone calls him with a sincere heart, be it a master or beggar, criminal or holy person, human or evil one, God Siva quickly gets happy with him and finishes his wish.

God Shiva is known by various names; he has been indicated by over one-thousand names in the Puranas (the old Hindu scriptures). Many of the many famous good names of God Shiva are Aashutosh, Bholenath, Gangadhara, Hara, Kailashadhipati, Lokpal, Mahadeva, Mahamrityunjaya, Nataraja, Omkara, Pashupati, Pushkara, Rudraksha, Sanatana, Shankara, Trilochana, Umapati, Vishveshwara, and Vishwanath.

When the Devas and Asuras do the Samudra Manthan, special things are visible from the ocean such as Kamadhenu, Airavata, Ratna, Apsara, Parijata, as well as many others. All the items were distributed amongst the gods and also adversaries according to common approval, though there was an excellent battle that occurred to acquire the amrita or the nectar of eternal life, which was later on solved with the help of Lord Vishnu. When the deadly poisonous substance arose from the sea, everyone began to run hither as well as thither; no-one desired to share it, whether they were devas or the asuras. In such a situation, when that dangerous poison started to spread out, everybody came to Lord Shiva and prayed to him to save them and the entire creation. At that time, the gracious God Shiva approved their prayers and drank that toxin as if it was nectar. He was known by the name of Neel Kantha thereafter, owing to his bluish-colored throat that happened due to the effect of the poison (Siva stored the poison in his throat).

One particular famous celebration, in order to respect and memorialize the greatness of Mahadev, is Maha Shivaratri. This celebration is famous each year on the 13th night-time or the 14th day of Purnima (Full Moon) of Shukla Paksha of the Magha or Phalguna month of the year. According to Hindu tradition, the marital relationship of Shiva and his beautiful consort, Parvati or Uma had happened on the day on which Mahashivaratri is enjoyed.

It is said that the follower who prays to God Shiva with a pure heart, grants finishes his desires. Therefore lots of people put the Lord Shiva statue in their residences.
