Drone Use and Problems

With the rampant use of drones, they can now be used by terrorists and other adversaries to threaten peace and order. Accordingly, drones can be used in five ways. First, it can be used for surveillance. When confidential information is kept or the space within requires strict security, surveillance drones are used which is why a number of markets have been developing drone defense equipment. Populated spaces such as stadiums are also turned into counterdrone stadiums for strict surveillance and to ensure the safety of every event. Another populated place that needs counterdrone protection and surveillance are airports. Antidrone airports are now a trend too. As the place is one of the most populated ones, with a large space involved, surveillance drones are a must.

The use of surveillance drones actually has good and bad sides. What’s written above are the good sides. However, when surveillance drones are misused, they may be able to threaten peace and order. For instance, when a surveillance drone has been flown and it has captured numerous people in one crowd, adversaries may take the chance to cause disturbance. This is one reason why antidrone airports and counterdrone stadiums are now in place.

Aside from being used for surveillance purposes, drones may also be used for strategic communications. This is especially applicable for remote areas where military groups are deployed for instance. On the other side of the story comes rogue drones that tend to disrupt important communications which is why deployed militants need counterdrone defence for added security.

Drones can also be used either for smuggling or transporting material. For instance, when there are relief operations, drones can be of much help in transporting goods to mountainous areas. It can also be used to transport crops in the case of farmers who may be utilising difficult areas in the mountainsides. The blackmarket may also benefit from the use of drones which may transport smuggled goods.

The most dangerous use of drones is disrupting events or complementing other activities. Drones can carry bombs or other explosive devices which may distort peace and order. It may also be used as weapons. To counter this, Droneshield has its own C-UAS embedded with counterdrone protection and counterdrone defence. In case rogue drones are on sight, Droneshield’s state of the art drone defense system will take these rogue drones down.

Technical Solutions

No single solution can fully mitigate the risks brought by UAS. However, several measures and technologies may be used or taken to be able to go through the challenges. For instance, Droneshield’s detection technology can sense drones even when they are invisible to the radar and lack RF links. With its AI system, it alerts the drone user and using the DroneGun, rogue drones can be taken down.

Many other potential technical solutions and promising technologies exist, however, countering UAS systems continues to be a problem. The threats can be mitigated through, however, possible damages such as the sudden landing of a rogue drone can cause problems especially when it has to fall over a crowd of people.

So far, solutions to UAS are forced landings which could be dangerous when in public space. Given the number of issues identified with the promising technologies previously identified, it is understandable that the UAS threat to personnel and equipment is still considered “absolutely pressing,” despite the prevalence of potential counter-UAS solutions.
