Some Of the different poker games played, Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and seven-card stud are the most popular ones. Omaha has different kinds to it. One such famous is Pot Limit Omaha 5 also called as 5-card PLO. It is a derivative of Texas Hold’em where each player is dealt with five different cards. They need to make the best possible hand combinations using two of their cards and three of the five community cards made available to every player.

These are played with some Pot-Limit rules. It means the maximum number of bets placed depends on the pot size. Unlike the Pot-Limit Hold’em, you cannot place a bet on all your chips. If you are familiar with 4-card PLO, you will find no concerns with this game. The rules for both are the same except for the hole cards dealt with each player at the table.

Ways to make a hand:

The poker sequence of hands in this game is like Texas Hold’em from high card to rare royal flush. But one crucial difference between 5-card PLO and Hold’em is in Omaha you need to use two of the private cards with three of the community cards for making hand combinations.

Say, holding K-K-K-3-2 does not give you three of a kind, but pair of kings. Also, the holdings Q-Q-Q-Q-2 does not give you four of a kind but only three of a kind. On such a board, the best hand would be private cards holding a pair of Aces.

How to play the hands?

Like under Texas Hold’em, the Omaha hand starts with forced bet called blinds. The player is sitting next to the button posts small blinds, and the player to their left posts the big blinds. 5-card PLO is played with a maximum of nine players, and each one receives four private hole cards.

Considering there is a pot-limit, the amount gets decided using the following formula –

The amount required to call big blinds or last bet + amount in the pot after calling the big blind or last bet

How is it played?

The first round of betting begins with the person sitting to the left of the big blind. Each player has the option to call, raise, or fold, with the action moving clockwise around the table. The betting ends when the biggest bet equals one or more players. If the raise of the player is not called by any other player, the one who raised the bet wins the pot without needing to show the cards. This rule is applicable through the hand.

The second round of betting begisn after the flop, i.e. three cards, face-up are dealt on the table. These communal cards are made available to every player, which they need to use with their four private cards for making the best five-card hand. In this round, if all players check, it goes to the next round of betting.

The third round of betting starts on the turn – one card dealt face up to the middle of the table. Once the third betting gets done, the fourth one begins on the rive – one card dealt face up to the middle of the table, which is again made available to every player.

The winner of the pot is the one who shows the best five-card hand, based on the poker sequence. If one or multiple players reveal identical hands, the pot gets shared equally.
