The Iron & Steel Industry is filled with hazards ranging from noise to physical to chemical ergonomics, it seems that this industry is quite dangerous to work in. Metalworker’s drill, press, punch, cut, bends, shape and fasten pieces of sheet metal to make construction & consumer goods. The most common of many of the injuries are hand lacerations and eye injuries from metal pieces. It is important for the managers and the supervisors of the workers to identify these issues at work which makes safety and safety training crucial for the workers of the Iron & Steel Industry. This makes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) hold significance for the prevention of any hazards like fire & explosion, skin contact with chemicals, radiation, noise & vibration, electrical burns & electric shocks, etcetera.

Follow the following guide for the better protection of your workers:

1) Choose the anti-cut hand gloves manufacturers: Choose appropriate gloves for the job. They must be suitable for your hands so that they are not caught by moving or rotating machine parts. The gloves must be comfortable to allow proper hand movement while holding stock materials & using tools. They must be sturdy enough to protect the hand against cuts & punctures from sharp tools, edges, burrs & metal pieces.

2) Be careful of all the work practices: You can guide your workers to change their work practices to avoid hand lacerations. Suppose, wearing the gloves while they touch, move or work with metal and avoiding to run the fingers along the raw metal edges. Try to use a brush or some other tool while brushing aside the metal shavings or scraps into the trash instead of using the hands. The shop or the workshop must be well-lit where you are working so that the workers know the material they are touching and know where their hands are all the time.

3) Analyse the hazards of the eyes: When the workers are working with metal, the metal pieces can spring & fly into the eye and cause pain, damage or even loss of eyesight. Cutting metal parts that are curved and bent can result in a ‘spring back’ effect where the cut piece is released and may fly towards the workers. Cutting and griding with the power tools may fly the small metal pieces or shavings towards the worker at a high-velocity level. It’s necessary to adopt the safety measures before coming in contact with flying metal pieces and objects.

4) Stay safe with industrial safety goggles: Your workers must wear proper safety eyewear when they are working with or around metals in the Steel & Iron industry. There is a wide variety of industrial safety eyewear available online by ppe manufacturers in India. So, the workers can change the glasses in regards to the job that they have as the safety goggles act as a basic barrier against the large/ small pieces of metal. To prevent the small metal shavings and pieces flying into your eyes, use the eye safety that seals the sides of the eyes. A face shield is an even better alternative used with goggles to protect the face from metal cuts and punctures from large and small pieces of metal.

The above tips would help you find the appropriate personal protective equipment as per the job and task allocated to the workers in the metal industry. It’s high time to analyse your workplace, make it safe and protected for the workers which would help in increasing the productivity of the project with the reduction of occupational hazards.
